I'm Corporal Michael Parks with your Marine Minute.
Navy Secretary Richard V. Spencer announced the last Flight IIA Arleigh Burke guided-missile destroyer will be named in honor of Lance Cpl. Patrick Gallagher, an immigrant from Ballyhaunis in West Ireland, during a ceremony in Washington D.C., March 12. Gallagher, an Irish-born Marine, joined the Marine Corps in 1966 and earned the Navy Cross for his actions with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, during the Vietnam War.
On this day in Marine Corps History in 1943,
The first group of 71 Women Marine officer candidates arrived at the U.S. Midshipmen School Women's Reserve at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The Navy's willingness to share training facilities enabled the Marine Corps to begin training Marine Corps Women's Reserve officers just one month after the announcement of the creation of the Marine Corps Women Reserves.
