New changes to the UCMJ are effective January 1, 2019. Some of the changes include a holistic modernization of criminal offenses, incorporation of new offenses including computer crimes, retaliation, and credit card fraud, as well as updated definitions and offenses such as a lowered blood alcohol level in drunk driving and new definitions for intimate partners in stalking and assault cases. Retired Marine Corps four-star general, James Mattis, recently announced that he will be stepping down from his current position as U.S. Secretary of Defense in February of 2019. Secretary Mattis achieved legendary status in the Corps leading Marines in Operation Desert Shield, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Iraq War. He retired from active service in 2013, and has been serving as the nation's Secretary of Defense since 2017. Semper Fi, and best of luck in your next endeavors sir!
