In exploring the character of a unified Korean Defense Forces, the author examines three aspects that concern or derive from the respective cultures of the two Korean militaries. These aspects include operational culture, military sociology, and military professionalism. The author speculates on each aspect based on the current security environment and how that environment can be expected to change during and after unification. Furthermore, he makes recommendations for Republic of Korea (and later unified Korean) policy toward a Korean Defense Forces, with the objectives of promoting national unity and regional stability. Finally, the author closes the article with six recommendations for US policy and military support to the Republic of Korea during and after unification that promotes global and regional security but also respects Republic of Korea (and later unified Korean) national and military culture.
