World War II marked a climax in the long struggle of the Army airmen to establish an independent Air Force. Despite inter service rivalries and cost cutting policies of the early postwar period, General Eisenhower, General Arnold and other air advocates set in motion the modern Air Force. The National Security Act of 1947 established the Department of the Air Force, and on Sept. 18, 1947, W. Stuart Symington was sworn in as the first Secretary of the Air Force. Shortly after, Gen. Carl Spaatz was sworn in as the first Chief of Staff. Today, we celebrate 67 years of Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence in All We Do.
