Every year, Armor Week highlights the importance of Armor troopers mastering the fundamentals and leveraging mounted warfare skills to claim the trophy and title of best crew. This year’s Armor Week consists of the Gainey Cup, a biennial competition named in honor of retired Command Sergeant Major William Gainey, the first Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 2005, SEAC was a newly created position established to advise the Chairman on matters of professional development of enlisted personnel assigned to joint billets.
He was the first person selected to serve in this position beginning October 1, 2005. SEAC(R) Gainey enlisted in the Army under the Delayed Entry Program in 1974 and entered Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on June 17, 1975. Since then, he has served in a number of enlisted leadership positions, from Gunner to Command Sergeant Major. He retired after nearly 33 years of service to the nation on April 25, 2008.
Competitors from across the Armor community, in the U.S. Army and international partners, compete in Armor Week’s Gainey Cup at Fort Benning. The competition rigorously tests and evaluates the best cavalry scout squad. show less
