On the morning of July 12, a fire was called away aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) while it was moored pierside at Naval Base San Diego. Base and shipboard firefighters responded to the fire. USS Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability, which began in 2018.
SAN DIEGO -- The U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), will hold a decommissioning ceremony April 14, 2021 in San Diego, California.
“BHR will forever be the ship that kept me in the Navy. It was heartbreaking to watch all those memories—to watch such a tremendously capable warship—go up in smoke. But it was inspiring to watch BHR’s crew rise to an impossibly difficult challenge, which showed me that BHR sailors are still doing amazing things and that she is still same great ship she always was.”
On July 12th, during a seemingly peaceful Sunday morning, one of a Sailor’s worst fears came to be. The Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) had caught fire. The fire spread quickly and Sailors assigned to the ship needed help. Sailors from USS Essex (LHD 2) answered that call.
