Exercise Cutlass Express (CE) is one of three African regional “Express” series exercises sponsored by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and facilitated by U.S. Naval Forces Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet (NAVAF/SIXTHFLT). CE, including CE 2024 (CE 24), is designed to train NAVAF forces while advancing AFRICOM Campaign Plan Lines of Effort.
CE 24 will enhance our relationships with East African regional partners and other participating Allied and partner nations and will increase the readiness of U.S. forces; enhance maritime domain awareness (MDA) and collaboration among participating nations; strengthen the capability of African partners to combat piracy and counter illicit trafficking; and secure the maritime domain in accordance with the AFRICOM campaign plan line of effort objectives and AFRICOM contingency plans. The underway portion of the exercise tests ships’ ability to conduct maritime interdiction operations (MIO) by boarding teams against simulated suspect vessels, detecting illicit activity, and follow-on evidence collection procedures. show less
