On April 20, 2010, the Macondo 252 well, 45 miles off the coast of Louisiana experienced a catastrophic blowout, causing a major explosion, fire and subsequent sinking of the Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit – Deepwater Horizon. The fire and explosion caused the deaths of 11 persons aboard the unit, and the blowout resulted in a catastrophic oil spill below the surface of the ocean, leading to an unprecedented oil spill response - the most challenging and complex our nation has ever mobilized.
