George Herbert Walker Bush served as the 41st President of the United States. A veteran Republican politician, he had previously held office as a congressman, ambassador, CIA director and 43rd Vice President of the United States during the Reagan administration.
Born in Milton, Mass., Bush attended the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover and enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday. At the time of his enlistment, he was the Navy's youngest aviator. According to his official White House biography, Bush flew 58 combat missions during World War II and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action. He later attended Yale University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1948.
Bush served two terms as a congressman from Texas before receiving appointments to several high-profile positions, including Ambassador to the United Nations, Chairman of the Republican National Committee and Chief of the U. S. Liaison Office in the People's Republic of China. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 1980, but was selected as Ronald Reagan's running mate. Competing again in 1988, he won the Republican Party's nomination and defeated the Democratic governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, in the general election. As president, Bush made his mark in foreign policy, facing challenges in Panama, the Middle East and Somalia. He was also in office in 1989, when the fall of the Berlin Wall ushered in a new world order. show less
