The Commander of U.S. Space Command is the DoD’s manager for human space flight support (HSFS) operations for NASA’s crewed space flight missions. As the DoD’s HSFS manager, USSPACECOM is responsible for the terrestrial rescue and recovery of NASA-sponsored astronauts and spacecraft during NASA’s commercial crew program and Soyuz off-nominal events. USSPACECOM is also responsible for the terrestrial rescue and recovery of NASA-sponsored astronauts and spacecraft for the Artemis program. Nominal means as planned, and within acceptable tolerances or prescribed limits.
