The United States has a long and close relationship with Norway on defense and security cooperation. At almost any given time, Norway is hosting training or exercises with the United States and other Allies and partners to support interoperability of forces. The Government of Norway has agreed to allow the U.S. Marine Corps to establish a limited rotational force of approximately 330 Marines in Vaernes, Norway, beginning in January 2017. Their presence in Norway will improve and further develop interoperability by allowing the Marine Corps to perform cold weather and mountain training in Arctic conditions.
