The first astronauts were selected in 1959 from a list of military personnel who met specific qualifications. U.S. Airmen have been involved in the nation’s human space program since its inception. A total of 338 astronauts have been selected to date, 84 of which have served in the Air Force. Today, astronauts come from a variety of backgrounds in addition to military service, they include schoolteachers, doctors, scientist, and engineers. Modern life is dependent on space. Air Force Astronauts are helping advance the science of human spaceflight and technology for the benefit of all mankind.
