The 2015 Department of Defense Warrior Games is an adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans. The Warrior Games, founded in 2010, are designed to introduce wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans to adaptive sports, encourage them to stay physically active when they return to their local communities, and inspire and promote opportunities for growth and achievement. Since its inception, the Warrior Games have been hosted by the United States Olympic Committee and presented by Deloitte Corporation. This year will mark the first time that the DoD will take responsibility for the operational planning and coordination of the event, to be hosted by the U.S. Marine Corps at Marine Corps Base Quantico from June 19-28, 2015. Approximately 250 athletes are expected to participate in the 2015 games, representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force, U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), and the
British Allied Forces. The 2015 DoD Warrior Games include wounded, ill, and injured service members from the British Armed Forces in support of the U.S.-U.K. Task Force and in reciprocity to U.S. Armed Forces participation at the Invictus Games held in London last year.
The 2015 DoD Warrior Games feature eight adaptive sports: archery, cycling, field, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track, and wheelchair basketball. Each service will also nominate competitors for the Ultimate Champion, a multi-sport event in which service members and veterans compete against each other in a variety of disciplines. Wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans qualify for the 2015 DoD Warrior Games by participating in structured camps, clinics, trials, and daily adaptive sports activities - executed nationwide through the Office of Warrior Care Policy Military Adaptive Sports Program (MASP).
