Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford became the 19th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Oct. 1, 2015. Prior to assuming the role of principal military advisor to the president, defense secretary and National Security Council, Dunford was the 36th commandant of the Marine Corps. Commissioned in 1977, Dunford served as an infantry officer at all levels, including commanding the 5th Marine Regiment during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
U.S. Navy Adm. Kurt W. Tidd will assume command from U.S. Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff will preside and officiate over the ceremony.
