Operation Damayan is a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operation set up in the Republic of the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan (called Typhoon Yolanda by Filipinos), which caused catastrophic destruction in the central Philippines. The U.S. military and other agencies are working together to aid and assist survivors.
The Joint Staff announced eligibility guidelines Jan. 14 for the Humanitarian Service Medal for Republic of the Philippines Relief Efforts, known as Operation Damayan.
Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III, commander, U.S. Pacific Command, visited Okinawa Feb. 7 at the Camp Foster Theater to commend and award service members who participated in the relief efforts during Operation Damayan in the Republic of the Philippines.
