The Alaska Organized Militia, in partnership with the City and Borough of Juneau, the Tlingit and Haida Tribal Emergency Operations Center, the State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, and the State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management State Emergency Operations Center, engaged in a coordinated effort to collect and remove disaster debris in the aftermath of the Aug. 6, 2024, glacial outburst flood. The debris includes household garbage, furniture, construction and demolition materials, sheetrock, and other non-hazardous waste. The Alaska National Guard activated local Juneau Guardsmen Aug. 7 with the final AKOM service member demobilized Aug. 23. A total of 63 service members took part in helping Juneau recover by cleaning and mucking out homes, delivering supplies, hauling debris, and providing public information support to the CBJ’s EOC. show less
