Following a powerful West Coast storm that caused extensive flooding, the Alaska Organized Militia mobilized to support recovery efforts in Kotzebue, the area hit hardest by the disaster. In response to a resource request from the State Emergency Operations Center, a team of 11 AKOM members deployed, consisting of six Alaska Army National Guard members — including one local member who began assisting on October 24 — four from the Alaska Air National Guard, and one member of the Alaska State Defense Force. The team will assist with damage assessments, debris cleanup, distribution of emergency supplies, and shelter support. On October 22, 2024, Governor Mike Dunleavy declared a state disaster emergency in response to the storm's impact. The team will remain on State Active Duty through October 30 or as required by the State Emergency Operations Center. show less
