SAN DIEGO (July 5, 2020) This coin was created for chief petty officers aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) to commemorate the ship's 2020 planned incremental availability (PIA). PIA is an intensive maintenance period during which Navy ships and their systems are repaired, renovated and upgraded prior to deploying. The front side of the coin features President Abraham Lincoln wearing a face mask, which signifies that PIA took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a hard hat displaying the ship's hull number. The color is copper to represent a penny. The back side of the coin is a mock blueprint of the aircraft carrier, representing the construction efforts; the chalk typeface is chosen to augment the blueprint concept.
