III Marine Expeditionary Force recognizes Black History Month and all the accomplishments African Americans have made in the Marine Corps. Private First Class James Anderson Jr. served as a rifleman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division in 1966, and was killed in action on February 28, 1967, during Operation Prairie II. For his heroic actions he received the Medal of Honor, making him the first African American U.S. Marine recipient of the Medal of Honor. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Cpl. Francesca Landis)
