The U.S. Allied forces landed on the islands of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida on August 7, 1942. The objective was to deny the use of these islands by the Japanese to threaten the Allied communication and supply routes between the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. The U.S. force, made up of predominantly United States Marines, overwhelmed the Japanese forces. The U.S. captured Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida to use as bases to support later campaigns in the Pacific theater. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Lance Cpl. Leighton Winslow)
