Thursday, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making June 19 or “Juneteenth” an official federal holiday. Ninth Air Force (Air Forces Central) Airmen around the world, along with the rest of the Department of Defense, are honored to commemorate the Juneteenth federal holiday, signifying that history is a means for understanding the past and solving future challenges and the celebration of the end of slavery is an important and enriching part of the history and heritage of the United States.
Juneteenth marks the date in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by Army Major General Gordon Granger, issued the famous General Order No. 3, informing the people of Texas that “all slaves are free.”
