This image was created in support of Black History Month, by overlaying an image on top of a blue background with a red banner and text superimposed on top, with the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point logo to the right of it and an illustration of Sergeant Major Gilbert H. Johnson superimposed on top of the banner, on Feb. 9, 2022 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. Johnson was one of the first African Americans to enlist in the Marine Corps and one of the first African American drill instructors, training the Montford Point Marines. Johnson quickly advanced through the ranks, and in January 1945 he became Sergeant Major of Montford Point Camp, which would later be dedicated Camp Gilbert H. Johnson, Montford Point, Camp Lejeune, in his honor. (U.S. Marine Corps photo Illustration by Lance Cpl. Michele Clarke)
