Seventy-seven years ago today on February 23, 1945, U.S. Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division fought and climbed the treacherous mountainside to victoriously capture Mount Suribachi. Six hardened Marines; Corporal Harlon Block (KIA), Private First Class Harold Keller, Private First Class Franklin Sousley (KIA), Sgt. Michael Strank (KIA), Private First Class Harold Schultz, and Private First Class Ira Hayes raised the U.S. flag for the world to see. This was one of many successful phases for the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. The invasion began on February 19, 1945 and lasted until March 16, 1945. The photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal atop Mount Suribachi won a Pulitzer Prize and has become an American icon. This graphic was created on February 2, 2022, at Communication Strategy & Operations, Marine Corps Installations West, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Ca. and intended for use by Marine Corps Installations West to highlight the 77th Anniversary of the Flag Raising on Mount Suribachi during the Battle for Iwo Jima.
