Opha May Jacob Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Aug. 13, 1918, at the age of 40. This was the first day women were allowed to enlist in the Marine Corps. Johnson was first in line, earning her the title of the first woman Marine. Johnson was stationed at Headquarters Marine Corps as a clerk where she managed service records for other female reservists. One month later in September, Johnson was promoted to the rank of sergeant. At the end of World War 1, Johnson was disenrolled from the military, but even as a civilian, she continued to serve the Marine Corps as a clerk in the War Department and as a civil servant until she retired in 1943.
