Armour was sent to flight school at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, and then to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, before earning her wings in July 2001. Armour graduated at the top of her class, while also becoming the Marine Corps’ first Black female pilot, and first Black female combat pilot in Department of Defense history. In March 2003, Armour flew with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169 during the invasion of Iraq, piloting a Bell AH-1 Super Cobra attack helicopter.
