On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Act of 1777, which entailed the design of the flag for the newly formed United States of America. It wasn’t until 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that June 14th would be known as National Flag Day. It wasn’t until 1949, that National Flag Day was officially established as a holiday. Though it is not a federal holiday, it is up to the President to acknowledge it as one.
