This graphic commemorates the 79th anniversary of the Battle of Tarawa. On Nov. 20, 1943, the 2nd Marine Division landed on Betio Island in the Tarawa Atoll, and were met with fierce opposition from the Japanese troops. This was one of the first amphibious landings in the Pacific where the Marines faced serious resistance, but despite the strong fortifications, they were able to secure the island in 76 hours.
