The Second Battle of Fallujah, Nov. 7 – Dec. 23, 2004, also known as Operation Phantom Fury, was a joint military effort between American, British and Iraqi forces meant to eliminate Islamic insurgents in the city. After the First Battle of Fallujah, April 4 – May 1, 2004, insurgents were still left in control of the city. The coalition went back into Fallujah in November 2004 to deter the spread of hostile forces in the city. Fallujah was put under intense shelling and multiple airstrikes before the ground forces moved in on Nov. 8. Coalition forces fought in the streets for days before eventually securing the city center. This graphic was made using Adobe Photoshop to commemorate the ending of the Second Battle of Fallujah on Dec. 23, 2004. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Cpl. Keegan Bailey)
