This U.S. Marine Corps graphic commemorates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The observance, which was referenced in Marine Administrative Message 006/23, will be held on Jan. 16, 2023. “Martin Luther King Jr., is the symbol of equality,” said Marine Corps Base Quantico Equal Opportunity Advisor Gunnery Sgt. Robert Mulherin. “He was an advocate of nonviolent protest, because he knew you could win hearts and minds with facts and determination, not rioting and destroying property. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Today, we have orders and directives that still outline prohibited discrimination. I would say Martin Luther King Jr., has had a lasting effect that shaped our nation and Marine Corps and why we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.”
