Spc. Kwamivi Mensah is many things - an Army cook, a school bus driver and a dad to three beautiful children - but most of all, he's a proud American.
Mensah moved here from the Togolese Republic, West Africa, in 2016 and joined the Iowa Army National Guard in 2019 to help pay for college. He already earned a master's degree in business law in Africa, but language and cultural barriers inspired him to learn all over again. He's currently participating in a paralegal study program at Kirkwood Community College, with a long-term goal of going to law school.
When Mensah isn't studying or working as a school bus driver in Cedar Rapids, he spends one weekend a month cooking with his fellow Soldiers. He was a key member of the team that competed in the national 55th Philip A. Connelly Culinary Excellence Competition in January 2023.
Mensah is a culinary specialist assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 334th Brigade Support Battalion.
