In honor of Black History Month Marine Corps Recruiting Command recognizes the Montford Point Marines, the men that paved the way in the Marine Corps during a time of segregation. The first black recruits arrived on August 26, 1942. Despite the obstacles and segregated training facilities, black recruits continued volunteering into the Marine Corps. After President Harry S. Truman issued the Executive Order 9981 in 1948, establishing equality of treatment and opportunity in the U.S. Military regardless of race, Marine Corps enlisted recruits and officer candidates of all races were able to join and train together.
