Marine Corps Recruiting Command recognizes the women of the Marine Corps during the annual observance of Women's History Month, March 2023. This graphic illustrates those that paved the way for all women in their respective fields or expertise. U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Carol Mutter, a native of Greeley, Colo., retired in Jan. 1, 1999 and was the first woman to attain the rank of lieutenant general in the Marine Corps. Capt. Anneliese Satz, a native of Boise, Idaho, is the first woman F-35B Lighting II pilot. Col. Nicole Mann, a native of Petaluma, Calif., is a Marine Corps pilot and was selected in 2013 as one of eight members of the 21st NASA astronaut class. She was also the first Native American woman to go to space. Capt. Vernice Armour, a native of Chicago, Ill., is the first African-American woman combat pilot and completed two combat tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Maj. Gen. Lorna M.
