2023 Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Poster

2023 Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Poster

The 2023 Department of Defense’s Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month poster is focused on Lieutenant Commander Kimberly Mitchell (USN retired). As a baby during the Vietnam War, Mitchell was adopted in 1972 by U.S. Air Force Airmen Kenneth Mitchell and his wife. As a young woman, Kimberly Mitchell was inspired by her father’s actions, and she went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy as a Surface Warfare Officer. She later served as a White House Military Social Aide under two administrations, worked for the Chairman for the Joints Chiefs of Staff, and served as Military Assistant to the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense and Deputy for the Warrior and Family
    Support Office.

The 2023 AAPIHM poster is provided in two optional color schemes: either blue or grey. Each poster’s content is identical and depicts a six-pane window. Within each windowpane are colorized or black and white photographs of Kimberly M. Mitchell. The photographs bleed slightly from one windowpane into adjacent ones.

The outside wall around the window is either a textured medium blue or medium grey. The window frame centered on the poster is a corresponding dark blue or dark grey. The silhouette of a seated female toddler is centered within the bottom four windowpanes. It is in the corresponding color of the window frame and her back is to the viewer. She is looking through the window towards the photographs.

The top left pane reflects a photo of Mitchell as a Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy. The top right pane reflects two photographs of Kimberly M. Mitchell. In one she is in a civilian business suit and in the other, Mitchell is in naval uniform at the National University in San Diego.

The middle left windowpane reflects a photograph of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Mitchell aboard the USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) in the Mediterranean Sea. The middle right windowpane reflects a photograph of USAF Technical Sergeant James Mitchell holding his adoptive daughter in Da Nang, Vietnam.

The bottom left windowpane reflects a photo of Mitchell as a young girl. She is wearing a black and white checkered blouse with black collar. The bottom right windowpane reflects Sister Maria Angela, a Vietnamese nun, holding baby Mitchell at the Sacred Heart Orphanage in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Centered at the bottom third of the poster is the observance theme spread across two lines in capitalized, tan-colored font. The first line reads, ADVANCING LEADERS. The second line reads, THROUGH OPPORTUNITY.

Centered beneath the theme is the observance title in smaller, capitalized white font, ASIAN AMERICAN PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH. Beneath the observance title is a tan-colored spacer line.

Beneath the spacer line is the subject’s name in capitalized, tan-colored font, KIMBERLY M. MITCHELL.

Right justified at the bottom right corner is the observance month in small, capitalized, white font, MAY. Beneath the observance month is a tan-colored symbol depicting a microphone. To the right of the microphone is a tan-colored quick response code (QRC) which, when scanned with a mobile device, will open an audio narration with this poster description. To the right of the first QRC is a second QRC which directs an individual to DEOMI’s website, www.defenseculture.mil. To the right of the second QRC are the seals for the Department of Defense and the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI).
