This digital illustration that commemorates the observance of Juneteenth was created in Okinawa, Japan, June 18, 2023. Although all enslaved people were declared free as of January 1, 1863 by President Lincoln in the Emancipation Proclamation, this did not end slavery in the nation. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to issue General Order No. 3, informing the people of Texas that all enslaved people were free. As Juneteenth is celebrated, the Marine Corps is engaged in a deliberate effort to promote a culture of inclusion where all Marines are unified by a common cause to combat inequality, discrimination, and destructive behaviors. The Marine Corps is committed to treating everyone equally, with dignity and respect. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Sgt. JVonnta Taylor)
