PEARL HARBOR (Sept. 12, 2023) A composite image commemorating Japan’s formal surrender and the end of World War II, referred to as Victory Over Japan Day (V-J Day). The image features a photograph of the present-day Battleship Missouri Memorial superimposed with photographs of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur signing the Instrument of Surrender aboard USS Missouri (BB 63) with U.S. Sailors in attendance, and U.S. Navy planes flying in formation above Tokyo Bay during the signing, Sept. 2, 1945. Photographs from the surrender ceremonies are official U.S. Navy photos in the collections of the National Archives and were retrieved from the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command’s website.
