This graphic was created for National Medal of Honor Day which was established on March 25, 1999, to foster public appreciation and recognition for all Medal of Honor recipients. The Medal of Honor is the highest distinction for military valor in action. One of the most recent recipients in the Indo-Pacific was U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. John Lee Canley who was honored for his courageous actions during the battle of Hue City while serving as the company gunnery sergeant with 1st Marine Division from January 31 to February 6, 1968. While under heavy fire, Canley successfully led multiple attacks against the enemy-fortified positions but was ultimately wounded. Despite his injuries, he continued on carrying multiple Marines to safety, later taking charge after his commanding officer was heavily wounded. Due to the dedication, perseverance, and self-sacrifice that was showcased through his challenges and obstacles, Canley was awarded the Medal of Honor on October 17, 2018. This graphic was created using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Pvt. Audrie Nelson)
