This graphic was designed to commemorate the anniversary of Guadalcanal, created on August 5, 2024. On August 7, 1942, men from around the world arrived on the shores of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, beginning a series of battles, which was the beginning of the first offensive position the U.S. took in the pacific; the series of battles became a turning point in World War II, where the U.S. fought for six months to successfully hold the island against the axis powers. Unfortunately, this left the U.S. with 7,100 Marines and soldiers dead and approximately 8,000 wounded. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Lance Cpl. Casey Bonestroo)
