The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Ranger graphic was created to highlight the important community engagement, preservation of natural resources, and managing recreational grounds mission sets. The cover graphic was used on the internal, monthly commander’s email called the Command Blast. Each cover illustrates the robust mission of the Omaha District. The cover is designed in a comic book aesthetic to add subtle, heroic tone to the work that the rangers accomplish. The three highlighted rangers are local to the Omaha area. They stand behind one of the districts six spillways within the district. The custom illustration highlights the iconic Fort Peck powerhouse – this first of the dams on the Missouri River. A Piping Plover stands on the shoulder of the central ranger showcasing the importance of natural resource preservation. A recreational vehicle drives down the earthen dam in route to a campsite while the boat and side-by-side showcase some of the ranger vehicles used in their patrols. The illustration was largely accomplished by redrawing from sketches on paper and photos taken of the rangers in Adobe Illustrator while brush work was used in Adobe Photoshop to finish and add texture to the illustration.
