This graphic was created to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the 509th Composite Group. The lineage of the 509th Operations Group, under the 509th Bomb Wing located at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., originates with the 509th Composite Group during the World War II era. The 509th Composite Group was activated on Dec. 17, 1944 at Wendover Army Air Field, Utah with the sole purpose of delivering an atomic weapon and ending the war.
