This graphic illustration was made in remembrance of U.S. Marine Corps Corporal William T. Perkins, the only combat photographer to receive the Medal of Honor, created Jan. 15, 2024. During Operation Medina in the Vietnam War, Perkins, attached to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, fought against hostile forces near Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. A grenade was thrown near Perkins and his fellow Marines, and he immediately jumped on top of it, shielding his fellow Marines from the explosive but paying the ultimate sacrifice. Perkins was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on June 20, 1969, by President Richard Nixon. (U.S. Marine Corps layout and design by Sgt. Keegan Bailey)
