This photo illustration honors those who died in the fatal bombing of a barracks used by the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, part of the 1/8 Battalion Landing Team, a subordinate unit of the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit, in Beirut, Lebanon, Oct. 23, 1983. The attack killed 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers. Afterward, survivors created a makeshift memorial at the site with the inscription: “24 MAU: They Came in Peace.” Three years later, a formal memorial was dedicated at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to the 243 Marines, sailors and soldiers who lost their lives. The memorial included the phrase “They Came in Peace,” the poem The Other Wall by Robert A. Gannon, and the names of all 243 fallen service members cast in bronze.
