    Honor, Courage and Commitment

This photo illustration honors the Marines who raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi after the Battle of Iwo Jima on Feb. 23, 1945. The battle is considered one of the bloodiest in Marine Corps history, with a casualty ratio of three Marines for every two enemy Japanese soldiers. After an amphibious landing on the island’s volcanic ash beaches on Feb. 19, 1945, the Marines faced intense enemy machine gun fire and artillery bombardment. Despite the challenges of heavy enemy fire, difficult terrain, and equipment issues, they made their way to the island’s bunkers, which were connected by a vast network of tunnels, complicating their efforts. After eight days of relentless fighting, the Marines of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division, were ordered to summit Mount Suribachi. On the peak, six Marines—Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon Block, Pfc. Franklin Sousey, Pfc. Ira Hayes, Pfc. Harold Schultz and Pfc. Harold Keller—were photographed raising the U.S. flag. These Marines, and all who fought in the battle, exemplified the Marine Corps’ core values of honor, courage and commitment, showing bravery in the face of a relentless enemy and dedication to their fellow Marines, their Corps and their country.
