A GIF created in remembrance of the Iwo Jima flag raising at Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan, Jan. 27, 2024. The Iwo Jima flag raising occurred on Mount Suribachi, Japan, Feb. 23, 1945. “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima,” a well-known photo by Joe Rosenthal, sparked a wave of patriotism in the United States during World War II. The men in the photo, from left to right, are U.S. Marines Cpl. Harlon Block, Cpl. Harold Keller, Pfc. Franklin Sousley, Sgt. Michael Strank, Pfc. Harold Schultz, and Pfc. Ira Hayes. World War II ended in September of 1945, but unfortunately, Block, Sousley, and Strank would pass before the end of the war. “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima,” stands as a symbol of the unwavering patriotism and selflessness of the U.S. service-members who gave their lives for the freedom of the people. This graphic was created on Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premier Pro, and Adobe Illustrator. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Lance Cpl. Hallie Hall)
