Behind the Curtain: A Mental Health Graphic

This U.S. Marine Corps graphic features U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Nicholas Miller, a transmission chief with 4th Marine Division, Galveston, Texas, created on April 14, 2025. Miller was a recruiter with Recruiting Station Twin Cities, Minnesota, when he experienced a crumbling marriage which left him alone in his home as he finished his tour of duty. Around the same time, Miller was notified of the crushing news that his brother had passed away. Leading up to these events and especially after, Miller struggled to cope with the trajectory of his life, he said. He looked for support in bad habits, and he avoided talking about the issues going on inside his mind. Eventually, he realized how much his mental health declined and searched for healthy support. The Corps, which discusses mental health regularly, provides resources to its Marines, including counseling and therapy alongside other necessary tools linked to personal struggles, which Miller took advantage of after realizing his decline in mental health. He explained that resilience and growth came when discovering purpose, and he works now to demonstrate that resilience is not about solely enduring hardships but also seeking help and helping others. Miller’s story of resilience is a snapshot into the complexity of a person’s life—a look behind the curtain—as everyone has a story of adversity they triumphed, because they are still with us today to tell the tale. It’s through his story, he said, he hopes to inspire others to push forward through their hardships but rely on others along the way, too. “Every Marine has that inherent trait—resilience,” he explained. “It’s something we’re bred with; it’s the individuals who strive to do more with less; it’s who we are as a Marine Corps.” (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Cpl.
