The Spartan helmet links in with the 56 FW emblem, which looks like a Spartan shield. The wings are from the “Hap Arnold” AF symbol and represent that this program is to enhance the flying mission. The motto “Iron Sharpens Iron” is taken from Proverbs 27:19: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” It’s perfect for the fighter pilot population; it resonates with them, and they refer to their jets as “iron on the ramp.”
