Major Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, the commanding general of 1st Marine Division, presents a book on the history of Camp Pendleton to Gen. Alexander A. Vandegrift's granddaughter and great granddaughter, Vallerey and Serina Vandegrift, during their visit here, Aug. 27, 2013. General Vandegrift was the 18th commandant of the Marine Corps and the first Marine officer on active duty to attain four-star rank.
