The 5th Marine Regiment’s football team upholds the regiment’s nickname, the Fighting Fifth, with current players such as Sgt. Ricardo Ramirez, who despite losing his hand during combat operations, plays cornerback on the team. Ramirez, squad leader attached to the regiment, deployed with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, to Iraq where he lost his hand when a flash bang he was holding grenade detonated, Feb. 22, 2006. After the injury, Ramirez accomplished with 17 pull-ups during his first physical fitness test by taping his injured wrist to the bar.
