Members of the Texas Military Forces and government officials render salutes at the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor presentation ceremony honoring the service of Audie L. Murphy in Farmersville, Texas on Oct. 29, 2013. Texas Governor Rick Perry presented the medal, the state's highest military award for valor, to Ms. Nadine Murphy Lockey, Murphy's sister, on his behalf. Representative Scott Turner spearheaded the effort to recognize Murphy with the honor.Born in 1925, Murphy enlisted in the military at the age of 17. His service earned him 33 awards, including the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest honor for bravery in combat. He joined the Texas Military Forces in 1950, eventually reaching the rank of Major.
