Rct. Nathan Brown, Platoon 3100, Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, clambers over a wall Nov. 6, 2013, while on an obstacle course on Parris Island, S.C. The course is designed to improve recruits' balance, coordination and physical strength while exposing them to the type of obstacles they may face in a battle zone. Brown, 19, from Mansfield, Ohio, is scheduled to graduate Dec. 13, 2013. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
