Staff Sgt. Joshua Smith, a drill instructor for Platoon 3097, Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, encourages recruits to get over a set of parallel bars on an obstacle course Nov. 6, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The course is designed to improve recruits' balance, coordination and physical strength while exposing them to types of obstacles they may face in a battle zone. Smith, 30, is a native of Saginaw, Mich. Lima Company is scheduled to graduate Dec. 13, 2013. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
